NSU Club Progression (Developmental Pathway)

After Cubs and early In-Town years we have 2 different paths for the elementary school age players. The In-Town Youth Soccer League is still an option which goes up through 4th grade, is one practice per week & the league is all NSU in-house. We also have the Rec Advanced program, which practices 2x per week and play in a league outside of the club. This step is designed to prepare players & teams for full competitive play. The Rec Advanced normally starts at 2nd grade, but we are beginning to add 1st grade groups. Additionally, we are finding that our Rec Advanced teams are outgrowing the YMCA league more quickly as we advance. We have created the Local Competitive program as the next step in the NSU club progression for when teams /players require a more competitive environment. The Local Competitive program registers and plays at the Tennessee State Soccer Association competitive club level. These teams play within the Middle Tennessee region. The Local Competitive is designed to create a learning, but competitive environment without the travel.

Basic NSU Principles of Play

  • Give your best effort and focus

  • Compete in a positive manner, showing good character and intent

  • Attempt to control the game with the ball

    • Possession with a purpose (to create and find success)

    • Find the way forward, be that quickly or more deliberately depending on what you see.

  • Press upon transition to defending to slow opposition’s counter, allow teammates to organize or win the ball back quickly.

  • Be dynamic and creative, play with vision

  • Learn to make confident, knowledge based decisions (recognize and decide)

  • Develop well rounded players who play with technical skill and poise under pressure

  • Have fun and enjoy the development process while playing the beautiful game

NSU Rec Advanced

  • NSU’s unique set up provides levels of play that are developmentally appropriate to specific age groups / levels (Developmental pathway). Each level builds upon the previous level, all underneath NSU’s developmental philosophy and style of play.

    • Levels: Cubs, InTown, Rec Advanced, Local Competitive

  • Provide a higher level of competition focused on individual and team development as a progression to full competitive play

  • Cost effective step leading into full competitive play.

  • Learning to find success and handle failure are important lessons, which are part of our curriculum, but learning to play well with good technique and good understanding to make confident game decisions provides the best positive platform to earn success in the long run.

  • Principles of play vs. win at all costs. Coaching and teaching consistently to our principles of play creates positive habits and instills confidence in the players and teams. Types of adjustments can be made in games to help find success, but consistent drastic changes outside of our principles of play challenge player confidence and undermine players ability to recognize the game and make effective decisions, thus slowing development. Game adjustments should be made that support the principles of play and help the players to be able to think and choose. If principles are not followed, improvement is unlikely.
